Seventy years of Hind Mazdoor Sabha: a journey of independent trade unionism
From 6 lakh members in Calcutta in 1948 to over 90 lakh today — without ever being part of a political party.
Hind Mazdoor Sabha was founded in Calcutta on 24–26 December 1948 by veterans such as Jayaprakash Narayan, Ashok Mehta, R.S. Ruikar and Maniben Kara. HMS was built on the conviction that the trade union movement must be independent of government, employers and political parties and work solely in the interest of workers.
Today HMS is active in more than 20 states, and the Haryana State Council carries this tradition forward.
